2023 / 07/ 03

Partnering with the Society of Wilderness (SOW), Compal organised a series of events to promote the leather fern restoration and wetland eco-education. Joined by staff, families and friends, we have invited Mr Lin Yu-Hui, SOW Taipei speaker, to share the origin, shapes, value, rarity, and the global and local distribution of golden leather fern, the relations between BCE plants, mangrove wetland ecology and the sustainability of natural environment at the online seminar on July 2 (Sun).

SOW began its restoration work of Shezidao’s Golden leather fern back in 2012 with the aim to restore the mangrove system a hundred years ago. SOW partner with Hydraulic Engineering Office (HEO) to invite volunteers every year on fern propagation by division. The ferns are even taller than adults. Today, more than two hundred bushes of golden leather fern are restored and work as water purifier and animal’s sanctuary. The fern itself has medicinal property to enhance health as well.

COMPAL became a member of UN’s '30x30' initiative in 2021 in protecting 30% of the planet for nature from the impact of climate change by 2030. We value the importance of biodiversity, protect BCE plants and devote ourselves to Mangrove wetland restoration project.

On 18 July 2023 (Sat), under the professional guidance of SOW and HEO, our staff entered brackish Mangrove wetland, home to leather fern, to begin another summer day restoration. The relations of the fern and the ecology system of Tamsui River exit are presented with detail by Instructor Chen De-Hong. Through manual removal of exotic species and accumulated wastes, every one is protecting the land with two hands, bringing back golden leather fern to its hundred-year home for good.
