On April 29, 2025, Ailiao Elementary School in Pingtung held a vibrant event themed “Insect & Chameleon Ecological Learning Day”, featuring the school’s long-standing insect collection, live specimens, and a special visit from eco-educator Mr. Ayuan and his chameleon friends.
The event was joined and supported by Village Chief Li Lifeng, Chairperson of the Ailiao Parent Association, Principal Ai Xuyi of Talou Elementary School, Manager Sophia Tang of COMPAL, and Secretary-General Wang Rufeng of the HCI Foundation.

Under the guidance of Principal Kuo Zonglie, students learned about diverse species such as the Taiwanese fan-horned beetle, African flower beetle, large South American rhinoceros beetles, longhorn beetles, mimic insects like the dead-leaf butterfly, and the elusive chameleon and gecko, gaining a deep appreciation for ecological diversity.
Children from Ailiao Elementary and its affiliated kindergarten actively listened, observed, and demonstrated their ecological knowledge. They engaged in meaningful interactions with the living specimens while upholding the school’s value of insect protection and respect for life.
Since 2022, COMPAL, the HCI Foundation, and the Taiwan Y Archi Association have jointly supported the “Beetle Up! - From the Heart” initiative. After six months of collaborative planning, the team launched the Insect Science Learning Center Revitalization Project, transforming the space with locally sourced Taiwan cedar and cypress, integrating insect biology, biomimicry, and sustainable architecture into a direct learning environment.

This renovated space now allows students to explore insect ecology, carbon footprint education, and ecological cycles, nurturing a green school culture and the spirit of a net-zero future.
Principal Kuo, a longtime advocate of ecological education, continues to lead children beyond the classroom through exhibitions and interactive learning that foster a deep connection with nature and awareness of environmental conservation.
The event also featured a talent showcase from the Hsu Chau-Ying Foundation’s arts education program, including performances by the saxophone and guitar classes, highlighting students’ confidence, creativity, and learning progress.
Through this project, COMPAL reaffirms its ESG commitment to quality education. By supporting environmental education, COMPAL aims to raise community awareness of biodiversity, foster students’ scientific literacy and critical thinking, and promote a future rooted in coexistence and harmony with nature.
