COMPAL Electronics Recognized with the “2025 Circular Economy Excellence Gold Award” by the Ministry of Environment for Excellence in Modular Design and Sustainable Material Innovation

Taipei, October 31, 2025 — COMPAL Electronics, Inc. (COMPAL) has been honored with the 2025 Circular Economy Excellence Gold Award by the Resource Circulation Administration, Ministry of Environment, in recognition of its leadership in modular design and sustainable material innovation.

The award ceremony was held on the morning of October 31, with Mr. Steve Huang, Vice President of the RD Unit at Compal, attending on behalf of the company to receive the honor.

In the afternoon, a Best Practice Sharing Forum took place, where Mr. Chih-Hung Chao, Manager of Compal’s Sustainability Office, shared the company’s practical experience in modular design and circular supply chain implementation.

From the Design Source: Creating Sustainable Laptops that Are Upgradable, Repairable, and Recyclable

COMPAL’s Modular Laptop project exemplifies the company’s commitment to waste reduction from the design stage. As one of the world’s first fully modular, upgradable, and repairable laptop platforms, the product demonstrates three key innovations:

Modular Design:

Major components—including the motherboard, memory, battery, and I/O modules—can be individually replaced or upgraded, reducing the need for full-device disposal.

  Extended Product Life:

Supports cross-generation CPU upgrades, significantly prolonging product lifespan and reducing electronic waste.

  Right to Repair:

Through a customer-driven Marketplace platform, COMPAL enables parts purchases and provides open-source design resources, promoting user empowerment and the “Right to Repair” movement.

By combining design innovation, business model transformation, and user participation, COMPAL redefines the electronic product lifecycle and provides a tangible blueprint for circular economy practices in the technology industry.

COMPAL’s Three Pillars of Circularity: Materials × Process × Design

1. Materials Innovation (Materials)

COMPAL continues to increase the use of recycled materials across its product lines.

Aluminum parts in laptop structures contain up to 75% recycled alloy, while plastic modules include 30–50% post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastics.

Packaging materials now incorporate 90% recycled paper.

Through its Sustainable Material Lab (SML), COMPAL has developed several innovative eco-materials, such as:

OysterPlas: a composite made from recycled oyster shells blended with regenerated plastics, reducing virgin resin usage while offering a natural aesthetic texture.

BioHusk: a bio-composite material made from buckwheat husks, featuring both low-carbon and durable properties for laptop enclosures.

All materials have passed product qualification standards and are widely adopted by global brand partners.

2. Low-Carbon Manufacturing (Process)

COMPAL implements Energy Management Systems (EMS) across its global manufacturing sites, upgrading to high-efficiency equipment and increasing the use of renewable energy.

The company also established a Carbon Dashboard, a real-time data platform that monitors energy and emissions performance, supporting brand partners in achieving their RE100 and SBTi carbon-reduction targets.

3. Green Product Design (Design)

Circularity begins at the design stage. COMPAL integrates Design for Disassembly and Modular Design principles early in product development, making products easier to repair, upgrade, and recycle.

R&D teams collaborate closely with brand customers to balance durability, cost, and circular benefits, ensuring products meet environmental objectives from inception.

Driving Circular Transformation Through Collaboration

As one of the world’s leading ODM manufacturers, COMPAL is not only a product designer and builder but also a driver and collaborator of sustainable innovation.

Vice President Steve Huang emphasized:

Circular economy is not a solo journey—it’s a revolution that requires collaboration among brands, suppliers, and manufacturers.

Leveraging its ODM role, COMPAL integrates brand customer demands, supply chain capabilities, and manufacturing expertise to enable two-way circular transformation between design and production—turning sustainability from a concept into reality in every product leaving its factories.
