Compal believes the most challenging projects can also be the most rewarding. Designing the first piston hinge presented a number of technical obstacles. The hinge needed to be frictionless and soundless with the durability to open and close countless times. We spent our time thinking about how to make the hinge work instead of all the ways it could fail. As a result, after over 50 tests Compal achieved the first piston hinge in the ultrabook market.

Refusing to Compromise Speed for Size

The trend in ultrabooks is thin, light, and powerful. However, it takes years of experience and knowledge to find the right design required to meet the performance needs of the world’s thinnest laptop.

Compal developed a rightful technical solution to fit HP’s objective. We created the first hyperbaric cooling chamber to allow for faster processing speed rather than sacrificing performance for lower temperatures. Instead of the traditional heat pipe design, our revolutionary cooling system funnels cold air over the processers while fanning hot air out. The Spectre offers more power than many competitors and a slimmer, sleeker design.

However, mass production of carbon fiber presents a mechanical challenge It creates small distortions instead of smooth surfaces. Compression by this concerns by working with Friends in our network. The XPS 13 is artfully constructed from premium materials that stay cool under Pressure, increase durability and reduce weight. Through collaboration and problem solving we provided Dell With a redesigned XPS 13 and the first carbon fiber C-panel in the market.

A Melting Pot of Industry Practices Overcomes Obstacles

Sometimes innovation happens in ways that you do not anticipate or predict. During testing of the XPS 13 we discovered a problem that ended up revealing a cutting-edge solution. R&D found the screen was too large to fit the case. Compal incorporated our knowledge of engineering techniques used in other industries to design a display with a smaller bezel that maintains top level graphics. We produced a 13-inch monitor in an ultrabook that would normally use an 11-inch. Our virtually borderless InfinityEdge display combines performance, practicality, and style.

Trend Setting FLIR Camera Phones

Compal has the ability to envision and actualize unprecedented ideas. In the past, forward looking infrared (FLIR) attachments were available for mobile devices or as stand-alone cameras. Cat S60 marked a turning point when Compal’s R&D team integrated FLIR cameras into mobile phones making the technology more accessible to consumers. There are infinite possibilities for mobile phones with FLIR technology: the automotive industry, construction, environmental monitoring and sensing, first responders, health care, law enforcement, mechanical and maintenance, outdoor enthusiasts, or veterinarians. The FLIR app allows users to measure specific temperatures of different on-screen objects or calculate the average between them.

Innovating Form and Function

At Compal innovation includes mechanical design as well as improvements in electronics. Cat S60’s stainless steel, carbon fiber die cast frame makes it drop-proof to 1.8m. It can withstand extreme temperatures from -25 to 55C. With the unique Lockdown Switch feature, CatS60 is one of the world’s most dustproof and waterproof smartphone that survives in depths up to 5m for 60 mins. These features exceed MIL-STD 810G requirements and allowed the Cat S60 to achieve IP68 certification. In order to test specifications and ensure optimal performance we updated all of our factories.

In our most recent endeavor, we created a unique Cloud Platform and health application to meet the specific requests of New Taipei City. The fitness platform that allows the health department to track users’ dietary and exercise habits, and seamlessly integrates feedback. Our health monitor follows the heart rate, blood pressure, exercise records, and weight of users to advise them on optimal solutions. Data gained from Compal’s fitness app gave the city new insight into one of the most popular forms of exercising, which then allowed New Taipei City to focus on improving some of the most popular bike paths. The health department now has the capability to identify and address knowledge gaps with push notifications and raise awareness on the importance of maintaining different aspects of health.
